Has common sense gone the way of the dodo?
Neither of my parents graduated from high school - almost unheard of these days. My sister and I are both college graduates with teaching degrees. My sister went on to receive her Masters in Education, as well as certification in Educational Leadership. My parents were proud of our
accomplishments; however, my mother really felt good-old common sense was just as important as academic learning - and in some cases, more important. What she lacked in formal education, she had in her common-sense approach to life. She did not suffer fools lightly and recognized that “There’s nothing common about common sense.”
The longer I live, the more I’m convinced she was right.
Case in point: On Sunday The Associated Press reported a real estate scam that recently took place in San Diego, CA. Some local homeowners who were facing foreclosure were conned out of tens of thousands of dollars by a handful of “real estate scam scum.”
You may say, “Old news,” and after just writing a blog about this very topic, I would be inclined to agree with you. However, when you hear the nature of this con I think you might say, “There is something new under the sun!” These low-life bottom-feeders convinced desperate homeowners that in order to save their homes, they could declare their properties to be independent nations. In doing so, bank officials would be barred from coming onto their property.
Hello! Are there still people in this country “falling off the turnip truck?” Do we need public service announcements and billboards across our nation touting the words, “IF IT’S TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, IT IS!” As one soft-drink company puts it, “WAKE UP PEOPLE!”
One of the good things that has come out of this incident is that authorities have arrested three of the five people involved with this despicable crime. My hope is they will all be caught and prosecuted. But I can’t help shaking my head, trying to conceive how anyone could fall for such nonsense. I can hear my mother’s retort to all this: “Common sense tells you … “ I guess it just doesn’t tell everyone.
