Getting schooled as a first-time home buyer
If you’re seriously considering buying a home, but aren’t quite sure of the process or all of the ramifications, sharpen your pencils and grab your backpack because the government wants to enlighten you about the whole process.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has approved Homebuyer Education classes,
conducted through local agencies across the country, that can help prospective first-time homeowners grasp the full scope of homeownership and the important steps that must be taken to reach that goal.
Classes are taught by HUD-approved counselors and participants are not restricted to those who are seeking to buy a HUD home. Understanding your credit, downpayment needs and securing a loan are just a few of the topics covered in the eight-hour course. To find the closest facility offering these classes, go to HUD-Approved Housing Counseling Agencies. Often, classes are without charge or at a minimal cost.
Knowledge is power, which in turn can breed confidence. Buying a home is a huge decision and one of life’s biggest financial investments. Take advantage of an opportunity to make your housing decision an assured and informed one.
TALK BACK: As a first-time buyer, would you take a Homebuyer Education class? If you’ve already purchased a home for the first time, do you think a class like this could have helped you? Why or why not? Post your comments below.
