Selling your home during the holiday? Don’t forget curb appeal
Those of us living north of the Mason-Dixon Line have wrapped up the outdoor care of our lawns and gardens. The last of the fall leaves have been raked, rose bushes have been covered and both the lawn mower and garden hose have been drained. We’ve battened-down-the-hatches, ready to experience winter’s sweet repose until the sign of the first crocus.
However, if you are trying to sell your home during this festive time of year, bear in mind you will need to continue to focus on its outward appearance.
As I drive through various neighborhoods in my city, I’m astounded by the decorations that adorn some front lawns. I realize everyone has their own taste in decorating. It’s just that I don’t think a home seller is doing himself any favors by having a 7-foot, inflatable Homer Simpson Santa rocking back and forth in the winter wind, surrounded by a wooden nutcracker, 3 mechanical deer and a dozen candy canes stuck in the ground.
Now don’t go thinking I’m being a Scrooge! All I’m saying is in the interest of selling your home, when it comes to seasonal lawn decoration, the rule “less is more” is a great one to follow.
The holidays can be an emotional time for buyers. If the street view of your home doesn’t have a “come hither” look, potential buyers may drive right on by. I suggest the following:
- Choose a few items that follow a theme and that express your personal sentiments about the holidays. Simplicity is the key.
- Remember, cramming your yard with a mish-mash of holiday decorations can be distracting rather than attractive.
- Be sure all items are in good condition, as flaws can readily be seen during the day.
- Consider showcasing just 1 or 2 lighted items, which can be an energy-saver too.
Curb appeal is a very important aspect of home buying and selling. You usually get only one shot at making a first impression. Decorate with simplicity and style, and you’re sure to attract the right buyer this holiday season.
