Protecting your property from home invasion during the holidays

It’s the time of year when people open their hearts and wallets to help others. Unfortunately, it’s also the time when burglars “help themselves” to other people’s possessions.

You’ve spent time choosing just the right gift for each person on your list. There may be fewer gifts under your tree due to budget constraints, but you’ve worked hard to earn the money to purchase presents for those you hold dear.

Here are a few suggestions for protecting your purchases and property:

  • Keep all wrapped gifts away from view of first-level windows.
  • Close shades/draperies when it is dark.
  • Make sure all locks on doors and windows are in working order, including the garage.
  • Don’t put boxes for big-ticket items at the curb. Cut them down and take them to be recycled.
  • If you use a security system, be sure to set it anytime you leave your home, even for quick errands.
  • While out shopping, keep your GPS out of sight. A thief can use it to direct him/her to your home.
  • If you leave your home for any extended period, use timing devices for indoor lights, TV and radio.
  • Stop mail and newspaper delivery when going out of town.
  • Tell a trusted neighbor of your plans. Ask if they’d be willing to shovel your sidewalk and driveway.
  • Be sure your homeowner’s insurance is paid and includes any costly items you may have purchased as gifts for your family.

Minding these simple safety tips can help to keep your holidays merry and bright.
