Christmas arrives early for some Habitat homeowners

The city of Greenville - located in Pitt County, North Carolina - is home to First Presbyterian Church. Shepherded by Pastor Bill Neely, the congregation is making Christmas a little brighter for the Habitat for Humanity homeowners in the county.

The congregation has committed to making the mortgage payments for more than 50 Habitat homeowners for the month of December.

The idea grew out of a discussion by Pastor Neely and the church’s lay leadership about helping an individual Habitat homeowner. Pastor Neely suggested that instead of just assisting one person, the church should consider making the December mortgage payment for all Pitt County Habitat residents.

When the shock wore off and the facts were explained, the group found out it would cost less than $14,000 to make the payments. The church’s offerings from its three Christmas Eve services are traditionally donated to local charities. Those offerings range anywhere from $8,000 to $15,000.

Pastor Neely encouraged the leadership: “We can do this. People will step up and give to this if we ask them for it.” Should the church fall shy of its goal, a yearly fundraiser held in the Spring could make up for the difference.

Oh that the generosity of the holiday season would be practiced throughout the whole year!
