Who would have thought home-grown tomatoes would make such a difference?  In Lisa Thompson’s view, they definitely do.  Lisa discovered that early in her career as a gardener and cook.

 Gardening is Lisa’s hobby and joy. The excitement is palpable when Lisa talks about the garden.  Her vegetable garden lines the backyard fence of her Summerville, SC, home.  Because of the South Carolina climate, tomatoes can ripen from June to December.

When the tomatoes start ripening, as they have recently, it’s a time for rejoicing.  Tomatoes are the highlight of Lisa’s garden, which also includes basil, chives, oregano and thyme.  She uses the tomatoes and herbs to create many delicacies.

These delicacies are on display when she invites friends over for dinner. It’s not unusual for her to play host a couple of times a week.  However, her favorite dinners are those with one or both of her daughters, ages 24 and 23.

Lisa’s garden also includes flowers, like gardenias, ginger lilies and wildflowers.  With the garden going great and the kitchen in over-drive, it didn’t seem that there could be a bonus.  But for Lisa, there is.

She has a nest of bluebirds in her bluebird house, which is also along the fence line. Two little bird heads peeked out recently.
