Their life together almost reads like a storybook.  High school sweethearts, marriage, three children, four grandchildren and a thriving business.  What more could a couple ask for?  Not much, in fact, they don’t ask.  As Jerry told me, they’re throughly satisfied with the “simple pleasures” in life.

 Take family for instance.  Three of their grandchildren live in New York City.  Carol and Jerry see them at least four times a year.  They meet at their children’s beach house in New Jersey, about an hour outside of New York City.  This allows all of them to put the activities of everyday life on the back burner and concentrate on making those loving connections, and memories that kids want and need.  Another grandchild lives close by to grandma and grandpa, and they enjoy spending memory making time with her, as often as possible.

The Bartlett home is another haven for simplicity.  Nestled in a well established neighborhood, filled with mature trees, their backyard is adjacent to property dedicated as park land.  And it’s back here that Jerry particularly enjoys “feeding the birds.”  It’s not unusual to see fox and deer scampering or sauntering into the backyard, which adds an “Edenesque” quality to the picture.  Sharing this sanctuary with Carol and Jerry are their 3 Dachshunds.  These high spirited dogs can sometimes, “drive us a little crazy,” but they are very “loveable” members of the family.

If an actual get-away is needed or desired, Carol and Jerry will jump into the car for a leisurely drive.  Within an hour they can find themselves coasting through beautiful “horse country.”  This calm and pristine land situated in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains is as tranquil as an Asher Durand painting.  With a sigh in his voice Jerry told me, “It’s a different world up there.”   This beautiful countryside, peppered with vineyards, makes Jerry imagine becoming a “Gentleman Farmer.”  But alas, not at this time.  There’s work to be done.
